Justice Clarence Thomas prefers to not ask questions during oral arguments; just let them speak and present their case. He’s also known as the RV Park Supreme Court Justice, by me that is, because of how every summer he goes out like Ernest Borgnine cruising the countryside in his RV getting to know the regular folks at RV parks, truck stops, and home improvement centers; the people who make this country work. Now saying that these people are the people who make this country work is by no means a slap in the face to the elites of this country, because you too have a place in making this country work, it’s just that your part is not as great or as important as the regular folk’s part is. So do not feel bad because you are important too, and we love you, well kind of; we accept you; we tolerate you.

Now I will move on to Justice Thomas, the Justice of the common man. He is by far my favorite Justice who has served on the court in my lifetime. Some of the things that I like about him is the importance that he puts on the family, the individual, and on interpreting the Constitution in a constructionist way. He believes as I do that the Constitution is not a living document, that it is dead. And that the only way for it to “live” is for an amendment to be added, and that is it, other than that, it is what it is, and it must be interpreted as it was written. You cannot, nor should you, “read” anything into it. What you need to do is to just read it, as it was written, and with the meaning of those who wrote it. This to me is a very simple concept and one that I wish more Justices would subscribe to.

“We Didn’t Know He Was Clarence Thomas”

High school students share a plane ride, invite him to graduation

High school seniors Terrence Stephens and Jason Ankrah, star football players at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Md., were sitting on a plane returning from a recruitment session at the University of Nebraska when they struck up a conversation with the man sitting next to them.

Their seat-mate just happened to be a major Cornhuskers fan.

When they started chatting, Stephens and Ankrah didn’t have a clue they were holding court with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

“I was amazed this guy knew so much about us as football players and as people,” said Stephens. “That was shocking. I felt honored to be known by someone of his caliber. He was just a regular old guy, sitting in coach, which really shocked me.”

By the time the plane landed, the students had figured out who Thomas was, and they promptly told their principal they wanted to invite Thomas to give the keynote speech at their high school graduation. Of course, Principal Carole Working didn’t exactly think Thomas would take them up on it. But he showed up at the high school on Monday.

“These young men had no idea who I was as I formed my first impression. I was just another stranger to them. They were wonderful ambassadors for your school and for their fellow students,” said Thomas at the Quince Orchard graduation ceremony.

When Stephens and Ankrah arrived on-stage to receive their diplomas, they were both embraced by Justice Thomas.

Ankrah will be playing football for Nebraska next year, but Stephens will be attending Stanford. The justice said he doesn’t have any hard feelings over that.
